Both of my sons chose to pursue their education through technical schools to avoid incurring substantial debt upon graduation. My older son decided to become a welder and soon after established his own polishing and welding business. Within just three years, he has achieved significant success, earning a six-figure salary and planning to expand his business by hiring new employees.
However, finding motivated and skilled individuals who are eager to learn and start a career has proven challenging. To address this, my younger son and I have decided to actively support and influence the industry. We are committed to rolling up our sleeves and creating a business with a strong intention to give back. Our goal is to contribute to skill labor grants and scholarship programs, and we are excited to see how much we can achieve in this endeavor.
In 2008, there were 2.3 million open jobs that did not require a four-year degree. Today, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), that number has surged to 10 million. This dramatic increase highlights a significant skills gap in the American workforce. Currently, for every five Baby Boomers retiring, only two younger workers are interested in filling these positions. This imbalance is more than just a statistic; it has real-world implications for businesses and the broader economy.
The shortage of skilled workers can drive up wages, leading to higher costs for businesses and reduced competitiveness. Additionally, it can negatively impact productivity and innovation as companies struggle to find the talent necessary for growth.
This shortage also presents a significant opportunity for prospective workers. Those with the right mindset and work ethic can leverage the growing number of scholarships and grants to enter the skilled labor force. This path offers a chance to build a rewarding career with a generous income and minimal upfront costs.
